Which Reichstag tour is right for you?

There is no single best Reichstag tour. The right one for your visit depends on three key questions: In which language would you like the tour? Is the plenary chamber important to you? And would you prefer to join a group or a private tour? This guide compares the tours on this page based on the details per the listing.

Meeting point, language and access to the plenary chamber are the main differences between the tours.

Our booking recommendation: the tour of the government district, plenary chamber and dome, with free cancellation up to 4 days before. Book this Compare options

You can visit the dome for free if you register with the Bundestag in time. A guided tour gives you something extra: a guide who explains the government district, access to the plenary chamber and a registration you do not have to arrange yourself.

At first glance, the five tours on this page look similar. In detail, they differ in language, plenary chamber access, group size, meeting point and cancellation policy. All information comes from the respective listings on GetYourGuide and applies only to that specific offer.

The short answer

For most visitors, the guided tour of the Reichstag, dome and government district is the best fit: 2 to 2.5 hours, in German or English, with the plenary chamber, roof terrace and dome. If you understand German well and want a detailed talk in the plenary chamber, choose the German-language plenary chamber tour starting at the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio. For families or small groups who want to set their own pace, there is the private tour, though it is non-refundable.

Which Reichstag tour is the best?

The one that suits your visit. Three things are key: the language, the plenary chamber and whether you want to join a group or go privately.

All five tours include the roof terrace and dome and cover registration with the Bundestag. The difference lies in the programme beforehand. Two tours start at Bundestag U-Bahn station and are run by the same provider. One tour is exclusively in German and focuses on the plenary chamber. Another combines a walk through the government district with the Reichstag, and one is private.

The table summarises the details from the listings. If you are still unsure whether a guided tour is worth it, first read how the free registration works.

Will a tour take me into the plenary chamber?

With most tours on this page, yes. However, the talk in the plenary chamber is primarily a German-language offering.

The Bundestag itself usually holds its talks on the visitor gallery in German. An English talk takes place on Tuesdays at 11:00, a French talk on Tuesdays at 13:00. This is reflected in the tours: the German-language plenary chamber tour includes the talk in the plenary chamber as a fixed part of the programme, the government district tour only in the German version, and for the private tour it is optional, only in German and must be requested at least five days in advance, subject to availability.

The two tours starting from Bundestag U-Bahn station explicitly include the plenary chamber in their programme and do not mention any language restrictions. As with any visit: if the Bundestag is in session or hosting events, the on-site programme may change.

Can you visit the Reichstag in English?

Yes. The audio guide in the dome is available in twelve languages, and several tours are conducted in English. However, talks in the plenary chamber are rarely offered in English.

For a visit to the Reichstag dome only, you do not need a guided tour in your language: the free audio guide is available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian and Chinese, among others. If you want a guided tour in English, you have three options: the guided tour starting from Bundestag U-Bahn station, the sister tour with roof terrace from the same provider, and the private tour, which is also available in French.

On the government district tour starting at Pariser Platz, pay close attention: the English version covers the history on the roof terrace instead of in the plenary chamber. The Bundestag itself offers group tours for foreign visitors in English, among other languages, but only for groups of at least six. Important: anyone booking a talk or tour must understand the chosen language.

What is the difference between the two tours starting at Bundestag U-Bahn station?

Hardly. Both are from the same provider, have the same meeting point and the same programme with the plenary chamber, roof terrace and dome.

The tour of the Reichstag, dome and government district and the government district tour with Reichstag and roof terrace are two options for virtually the same guided tour. Both meet at the corner of Paul-Löbe-Allee / Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, right at exit D of Bundestag U-Bahn station (U5) by the lift. Both are available in German or English and can be cancelled free of charge up to 4 days in advance.

The differences are in the fine print. The first tour states 2 to 2.5 hours, the second 2.5 hours. The second also notes that booked times may shift by up to two hours, as the Bundestag allocates the time slots, and that the roof terrace remains open during dome maintenance. Simply choose the option that has a suitable time on your preferred day.

Is a guided tour of the government district worth it?

Yes, if you want to understand what you see from the dome. The walk connects the Chancellery, parliamentary buildings and the former sector border.

Around the Reichstag Building stand the Federal Chancellery, the Paul-Löbe-Haus, the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus. After 1961, the Reichstag was right next to the death strip, and a section of the hinterland wall is still preserved in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus. With a guide, these buildings come to life with stories you can later recognise from above.

The government district tour with Reichstag dome lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the option, and public tours start at Pariser Platz 4. In German, it includes a talk in the plenary chamber (recommended for ages 15+), while in English, the narrative part takes place on the roof terrace. Public tours require a minimum of six participants, and a private option is also available. You can cancel free of charge up to 3 days in advance.

Is a private Reichstag tour worthwhile?

Yes, for families and small groups of up to six people who want to go at their own pace. However, note that the private tour is non-refundable.

The private Reichstag and dome tour lasts 1.5 hours per the listing and is designed for a private group of up to six people, in German, French or English. It starts at Pariser Platz 4 at the glass facade of Akademie der Künste next to Hotel Adlon, two minutes from Brandenburger Tor S- and U-Bahn station. From Brandenburger Tor, the tour goes through the government district to the Reichstag; you spend about 20 minutes in the dome per the listing. Registration with the Bundestag is included.

The most important point before booking: this is the only tour on this page that cannot be cancelled or refunded free of charge. Therefore, only book it once your travel dates are confirmed. If you want to see the plenary chamber, request the German-language talk at least five days in advance.

Who is the German-language plenary chamber tour for?

For visitors with a good command of German who would like a detailed explanation of the plenary chamber. You must be at least 15 years old to participate.

The tour of the Reichstag, plenary chamber, dome and government district lasts 2.5 hours and is conducted exclusively in German; good German language skills are required. The meeting point is the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio at Wilhelmstraße 67a, corner of Reichstagufer, near Marschallbrücke. From there, the route follows the Spree through the government district, passing the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus and the Chancellery.

After the security check, there is a presentation in the plenary chamber about the history of Parliament and Norman Foster’s renovation, followed by the roof terrace and the dome. All participants’ names and dates of birth must be provided in advance, and oversized luggage is not permitted. You can cancel free of charge up to 3 days beforehand. For background on the building, see our guide to the Reichstag’s history.

What should you know before the tour?

You must provide names and dates of birth in advance, bring a photo ID on the day, leave large luggage at home and be prepared for last-minute changes by the Bundestag.

Registration with the Bundestag is required for every tour. Providers will ask for your first and last names and dates of birth, and on the day itself you will need a passport or ID card. Large luggage is not permitted in the building, and there are no lockers on site. Dome visits may be cancelled at short notice due to parliamentary business, events, weather or security. In 2026, the dome will also be closed for maintenance from 19 to 30 October, but the roof terrace will remain open.

The Bundestag itself offers a free alternative: 90-minute tours of the building, held when Parliament is not in session, for up to 25 participants and usually in German. These can be requested for the current month and the next two months. If you only want to visit the dome, see our tips for visiting.
